My entire life I have grown up around ice cream. My father is a technician for ice cream machines and my parents have an ice cream machine in their dining room. With this background I have developed a different view of ice cream than most. See, people use “ice cream” as an all encompassing term that includes everything remotely similar to ice cream. They fail to realize the difference between ice cream, frozen custard, and frozen yogurt, concrete and soft serve, hard pack and soft pack, and the plethora of other varieties of so called “ice cream.” This variety is what makes it so appealing. With this assignment I hope to show the real story and variety of ice cream and help people come to appreciate it in a different way.
I enjoyed this assignment because I was able to take everything I learned about composition, color, depth of field, and lighting and apply it to something in a way that brought out its best and unique attributes. Finding different ways to photograph ice cream for this project helped increase my creativity and helped me think outside the box. It took me out of my comfort zone to go into professional businesses and ask to take pictures, but it was a great learning opportunity for me. Overall, this project was a great experience because it helped me realize that the principles of photography can be applied throughout life.
